Not only is it very rare to find “organic” Lishan teas, it is also true for all high-mountain terroirs and it is very refreshing to find highly principled growers like Mr. Wen that seeks to produce the best high-mountain tea experience possible as nature intended, which is not necessarily as the dominant agro-chemical industry proposes. This spring 2023 Lot 1232 carries in the tradition of what this garden has offered us nearly every season in the last 10 years we’ve been supporting their efforts, through thick and thin. With the news of the much drier winter and early spring weather, we were relieved Mr. Chen’s garden was spared and blessed with some rain provided by the micro-climate of Cui Fong on the western face of the Hehuanshan range. Made from a small garden of slow-grown Qing Xin leaves, this tea delivers all the subtle nuances of alpine meadow freshness, fragrant bouquets of exotic flowers and a thick buttery smoothness that enthralls the palate. When we say subtle, we don’t mean weak! We mean subtle as in intricate and complex but in a more subdued way that titilates the senses in many sensory riddles. This is not an “in your face” high nitrogen-boosted tea. We believe that when you allow this tea the attention and space it deserves, it will unveil its true beauty. There’s nothing like letting nature balance the the tone of what this tea delivers in a most harmonious and generous way. This tea also matures magnificently and will improve if kept sealed for at least one full season, making the spring 2022 Lot 1141 very appealing right now! Like everywhere else in Taiwan, this spring’s weather has greatly impacted yields with Lishan tea gardens reporting up to 50% less leaves to pick than expected. This directly impacted our procurement with much less tea to offer than previous seasons. Don’t delay in ordering your requirements!

Ryan –
This tea is complex and very expressive. Challenging to put the flavor profile of this very expressive tea into words. Let me just say it’s really, really delicious and far from ordinary.
I personally found this tea had its most optimal flavor profile by steeping a gram or a touch more per oz over 2minutes/2:00/2:30/3:15, compared to my trying 5 grams/100 ml for a minute.
I recently had another Li Shan from a different vendor, and while that was good, what sets this one apart is how wondrously expressive the flavors are and how this tea’s flavor simply demands you recognize it’s originality.
Nothing status quo about this tea. It’s totally expressive and impressive.

Dear Ryan,
Many thanks again for another of your much appreciated reviews. I am glad, and not surprised, that this wonderful Spring 2013 Organic Lishan Lot 232 did not leave you with a generic impression! If I may add in support of your findings that this tea definitely deserves a bit more leaves per volume of water to experience its numerous layers of aroma, taste and textures. Our experience, comparing it to other high mountain offerings of the same terroir, is that this tea reveals itself very gradually. One must wait until later steepings to experience its full complexity as if its treasure was well hidden inside the structure of the leaves. It is definitely not an “in your face” kind of tea. And what generosity! This tea keeps on giving after many infusions, and even if tapers in livelihood it still delivers pleasant and satisfying cups of a refreshing clean nectar.
The other impression that I would like to share after many samplings from this wonderful terroir is that this tea is possibly the best benchmark tea from which to experience and attempt to grasp the Lishan character. Everything that the Lishan terroir is renowned for is in those leaves in a naturally balanced way, as nature intended it. The human craftsmanship behind it is also very skilled in bringing out this harmonious tonal structure. Now that the Winter 2013 offering of the same tea is out, it will be interesting to find out if and how the seasonal cycle colours the enjoyment of this tea…

This tea is definitely buttery, like the description says, with a taste profile almost like buttered popcorn yet slightly floral. The other thing I’ve noticed with the teas I’ve ordered is that the leaves unfurl gorgeously and are faultless, unlike other oolongs I’ve bought. These are definitely teas to be steeped in gaiwans because you want to encapsulate the aroma until you are ready to drink it.
I look forward to my next set of samples from TTC!

Came as a free sample, thanks. Very interesting profile, you seem to get everything one likes about high mountain oolongs in this tea. Buttery, almond, frangipani, orchid, osthmanthus, gardenia, light brown sugar, the kitchen sink, etc. It does take its time to open up which makes the anticipation enjoyable when reached. The aromas were a little subdued but don’t let that fool you you have a real beauty here.

Beautiful tea, the aroma was there from first sniffer cup and still lingering by 3rd and 4th.
The taste was smooth and mellow. Very satisfying to sit down to such a good quality tea.
Living in Australia it can be challenging to find good quality organic high mountain oolong, especially award winning teas that are authentic.
This is my 2nd order and will definitely be ordering again from Taiwan Tea Crafts.
Sincerely
Maneeka
