There is a prevailing belief, even among tea professionals in Taiwan, that summer is the best season for black teas. We beg to differ! For the same reasons springtime white, green and oolong teas are more expressive and aromatic, black teas are no different, especially in Taiwan. It’s always with great anticipation that we await the call to visit our friends in Yuchi Township to enjoy good company, and good tea! If there is one family we share common values with and would prefer to collaborate with to make good tea with it would be the Li’s. This spring we were particularly delighted to see that their youngest teen son is now fully involved in the family business and was one of the principal artisans behind this Spring 2023 Lot 1241 and the Fall 2023 Lot 1280. It’s not often that we see family owned tea operations foster succession within their ranks, and we celebrate that! Reason the more to propose and promote this wonderfully balanced Lot. The Li’s are also behind our superb Organic T-21 Hong Yun and Organic T-18 Hong Yu. All three black teas are made from leaves that are grown in one of the most beautiful and secluded tea gardens we’ve seen in Taiwan located deep in the rolling hills of Yuchi Township, and on the foothills of Yushan. No pesticides are used in their gardens and the dangers of contamination from neighbouring agricultural activity is virtually nil as the squeaky clean test reports we conducted concluded. So much so that the teas surpass the stringent EU norm for pesticide residues. Does it really mater, some may ask? We certainly believe so but a sip will convince you without a doubt. This tea is “clean” with flowing, crisp, tangy fruit notes with a hint of butter caramel sweetness. This springtime T-8 assamica cultivar will deliver a less tannic cup along with a refreshing smoothness that is very rewarding. Enjoyed with or without milk, hot or iced, but always without restraint!

Being a long-time green gaoshan drinker and someone who doesn’t appreciate harsh tannins, this tea was quite a find. It’s smooth for a black tea. Liquid chocolate is what comes to mind, except that I prefer the balance of this tea over any chocolate I’ve ever had.

Smooth and enjoyable tea.
Not astringent and easy to brew.
Very forgiving so it’s hard to over brew unless you use very long infusions with boiling the water.
Personally, i think short 10-15 second infusions at 91°C provides the best flavor, but as always: make sure to experiment yourself to find the best taste profile for you.
