In ceremonial settings, this long shallow dish resembling a sampan 舢舨 shānbǎn – the traditional flat fishing boat used in many parts of Asia – would serve as a presentation surface on which the tea that is about to be prepared is laid on it in order to be presented to the guest and admired for its visual and olfactory appeal. After the appraisal of the tea by the guests, a small matching rake would then serve to delicately bring the leaves from the chahe into the pot. Of course, we leave it up to you to create your own ceremonial interpretation and ritual. After-all, who says you can’t be both the celebrant and the guest? Alternatively, this barquette can also act as an incense stick holder thanks to a small perforation at its tip allowing the gathering of the ashes as the stick burns. This handy accessory is hand-made by a Nantou County local artisan who specializes in transforming the humble and most versatile bamboo wood into a multitude of unique and useful objects. To do so, he has developed a unique technique that allows him to preserve the natural beauty of the green skin of the plant for its natural beauty and structural integrity. All elements are hand cut, formed and finished using natural waxes. Interestingly, the barquette is assembled from two sections of the same cylindrical section that are cut and precision-assembled together with the skin showing on the top surface and sculpted on the underside. The barquettes are about 20m mm in length and 44 mm across. Proudly made in Nantou County, Taiwan.
