We are very excited to introduce this New Elegant Teapot which builds on the original design that was the focal point of its namesake’s tea ware series which remains our most popular since it’s introduction at the very beginning of Taiwan Tea Crafts. Simple flowing lines and well-proportioned volumes have made this series a joy to use as well as a joy to look at for the hundreds who adopted them. With the feedback received from all the users of the previous model, we were able to develop and propose this improved design in form, function and build which does even better at highlighting the distinctive character of all Taiwanese teas, without exception. Building on the original design’s popular lower profile, we’ve increased the lid opening from a 40 mm circumference to 55 mm to allow twisted-leaf teas like Bao Zhong and Taiwanese Blacks to be inserted in without breaking them. It also makes discarding them a breeze. The dome lid sits very precisely with a perfect seal. Don’t let the low number of filter holes fool you, this pot pours quicker than its predecessors, thanks to a larger diameter short and straight spout. Finally, the shallow handle offers precise handling. All this in a 125 ml size that is perfect for gongfu-style shared introspections or solo sessions. A newly-revised matching handleless Elegant Pitcher series was devised to pair with this pot. A real pleasure to work with in all situations and with all teas. Handcrafted in Taiwan.

We simply have nothing but praise regarding porcelain as a tea making material and praise as well towards the excellent styling and craftsmanship behind every item of our Ivory Porcelain series. Porcelain is lightweight, hard wearing (despite common misconceptions), offers precise tolerances and great precision in the finished products, if they are well made, of course. It is a perfectly neutral material as opposed to unfinished clays that colour the taste of the tea. When making fragrant teas like high mountain oolongs, porcelain acts like a mirror to reflect all of the aromas and taste out of the leaves. It is our experience that porcelain gives the best results and are often found in the equipage of experienced tea masters as well as being the reference material when visiting producers to evaluate teas.

This pot works best for unrolled oolong and black tea. It is able to fit about 8 grams of ball rolled oolong but has trouble closing with 10+grams of oolong after they unfurl.
Unheated, the pour time of a full pot is around 11 seconds.
Heated, the pour time is lower at 7 to 8 seconds, likely due to expansion.
Pour time is also generally below 10 seconds when brewing non-ball rolled oolongs, but can be up to 20 seconds with ball rolled oolong. This makes precision pouring with ball rolled difficult.
The lid sits somewhat loosely on the body. When cold, the seal is good: when a finger is pressed on the hole on the lid, the flow stops. However, when heated, the seal is not as good, and tea can easily drip out from between the lid and the rim. The poor sealing can be mitigated by making sure the lid is also hot so that it has also expanded like the body. Also pushing the lid forward towards the spout helps. Overall, this isn’t too bad of an issue, but the seal is definitely not perfect.
The glaze appears to come together in a line running down the spout and around the pot. This suggests this pot was at least partially if not entirely machine made. The glaze is a bit uneven in the part of the lid that slides into the pot. This area is a bit “rough” and easily stained, suggesting the porcelain paste used is not completely hard. The bottom unglazed ring is also a bit “sandy” and prone to staining.
From afar, the pot has a clean aesthetic appearance.
Overall, this is a very convenient pot to use for all whole leaf tea types. Although the price is a bit high for what it is and how it performs, the pot is very usable and there are no other pots like this in the market.
