Da Bai's Sand Mist Fluted Yuan Zhu Teapot, 150 ml
This exquisite Yuan Zhu (pearl-shaped) pot is par of a new body of work exploring fluted ornamentation on simple modern shapes inspired by Chinese classic designs and refined by the Japanese influence brought to Taiwan during the colonial years. It is the work of Da Bai, the eldest sibling of the Bai Mu Quan family and, you will have guessed, the older brother of Xiao Bai that we feature extensively on Taiwan Tea Crafts. We are happy to finally give him more space on our site through the release of many items that were produced during the summer of 2023. There's definitely a family style that is recognizable between the 2 brothers as well as a high level of precision in their craftsmanship which is simply stunning. Da Bai's use of different textures and tonal experimentations in his glazings are both appropriate to the shape of the piece and gives an added texture in the tone of the finish. This being said, this pot marks a departure from the elaborate glazings he expertly crafts and plays more with simple geometrical shapes and adds contrasts through texture. From the shaping and positioning of the handle and the spout down to the dish of the flat lid which fits snuggly into its recessed area; everything inspires perfection. The wall thickness is thin and even all throughout the body and lid. The spout is short with a generous opening for fast pour outs that will please all Taiwanese gongfu practitioners. A full capacity pour out of 160 ml of water was timed at just under 12 seconds. The inside finish of the pot is glazed in white for neutral brewing of any style of tea. The lid's seat as well as the lip of the lid were left bare in order to create a better seal of the teapot for dripless pouring. A matching pitcher and cups completes the set. This unique item is signed by the artist and proudly handcrafted in Taiwan.
