Da Bai's Misty Green Porcelain Gaiwan with White Lid, 125 ml
This modern re-interpretation of a classic Chinese gaiwan design is the work of Da Bai, the eldest sibling of the Bai Mu Quan family and, you will have guessed, the older brother of Xiao Bai that we feature extensively on Taiwan Tea Crafts. We are happy to finally give him more space on our site through the release of many items that were produced during the pandemic. There's definitely a family style that is recognizable between the 2 brothers and their use of porcelain as their material of choice. This gaiwan is a good example of the elegance and purity of line that characterizes Da Bai's work. The precision in his craftsmanship is simply stunning considering the challenges of working with porcelain as his material of choice. The wall thickness is ultra thin and even all throughout the cup and lid with a gentle taper towards the flared lip. This gaiwan is a bit more angular in its lines but retains the elements that references designs of the dynastic period, like the higher pedestal style footing of the cup. The larger diameter saucer acts more like a tea boat as this gaiwan is meant to handled by the generously flared lip. To further highlight the styling of the piece the footing and lid are finished with a contrasting mat white glaze, just like the inside of the cup is. Finally, an intricate misty green glaze adorns the outer surfaces of the cup with vaporous shades of mauve and green brushed horizontally. The saucer offers a plainer finish that borders of grey. The final result is stunning and a true pleasure to handle. This unique item is signed by the artist and proudly hand-crafted in Taiwan.
