Da Bai's Sand Mist Fluted Chawan, 200 ml
This unique handmade chawan (tea bowl) is also commonly called shǒu pěngbēi 手捧杯 which we can be best translated as a cup you cradle with both hands. This best illustrate the new found interest in tea bowls in Taiwan's tea circles. Most of us are familiar with the wisked green teas of Japan for which this particular Sand Misted Fluted Bowl would fare very well, having a nice flat bottom that is preferred for such preparations. In Taiwan, they are mostly used to serve a more generous serving of tea – enough to cover the bottom, and little more – and experience the added sensory connection of feeling the warmth of the tea while cradling the cup in both hands. It's a way of further being at one with the tea that will transfer its soothing warmth to your insides. This unique handmade item was made alongside all the other Fluted Sand Mist Glaze items at the end of summer 2023 by Da Bai, the eldest sibling of the Bai Mu Quan family. This young potter, despite his relatively short tenure behind a potter’s wheel, has quickly mastered his craft with works of great sensibility in style and form whilst never compromising on function. His choice of classic shapes over more modern ones and his preference towards the simple elegance of more subdued finishes and playing with textural contrasts are characteristic of his work. Da Bai’s use of a gently fluted outer-surface is subtle which is both appropriate to the shape of the piece and gives an added texture in the tone of the finish. The execution is flawless as can be expected from the Bai brothers. The wall thickness is thin and even all throughout the body. This pitcher, like all of the other Fluted Sand Mist items we propose, is an example of a perfectly mastered technique. What you see in the pictures is what you will get. This unique item is signed by the artist and proudly handcrafted in Taiwan.
