Hand-Painted Bathing Beauty Porcelain Teapot, 225 ml
This classic Shui Ping teapot is possibly the most widely recognizable shape and one of the most widely used in both Asian and the West, but this one is unique as it matches our popular Bathing Beauties series of cups drawn by renowned Taiwanese artist Bai Zong-Ping. We’ve hesitated at length to introduce them because of their subject matter but, after meeting their creator again recently, it was very clear that his intent is to respectfully celebrate, as opposed to exploit, the female body. Bai Zong-Ping is not only is he a master potter in his own right, he is also an exceptionally gifted painter and sculptor with a lively and colourful palette. His canvases remain ceramic objects he crafts in the pure Taiwanese tradition of instilling beauty to useful objects. This subject matter plays on the allegory of taking a bath in tea (which we highly recommend…) where beauties are shown in different ways to enjoy the novelty of it. His canvases remain ceramic objects he crafts in the pure tradition of instilling beauty to useful objects. There is also exuberant side to the artist which is highlighted in the little details he puts in the decoration of his pots. This is exemplified by the unique braided cord that he attaches to the lid of each pot he makes in this series. We’ve seen many in his studio and can attest that each one is different. Of course, we chose the prettiest one! Please note that glaze crazing inside and out is intentional and will render a nicely veined appearance with time. Needless to say, this item is unique, signed by the artist, and proudly handcrafted in Taiwan. Complete your set with hand-painted cups featuring the same character in 6 different scenes as a perfect complement to this unique teapot.
