Hand-Painted Seated Luohan Porcelain Teapot
This classic Shui Ping teapot is possibly the most widely recognizable shape and one of the most widely used in both Asian and the West, but this one is unique as it features a whimsical hand-painted character called luóhàn 羅漢, or Lohan, which is how buddhist arhats are referred to here. Luohans are individuals that are far ahead on the path of enlightenment but not quite buddhas. Drawn by renowned Taiwanese artist Bai Zong-Ping, his character plays on the imperfections of Luohan's higher spiritual attainments where desires like good food and drink have not been fully eliminated and relapse into the pleasures of life remain possible. Not only is Bai Zong-Ping a master potter in his own right, he is also an exceptionally gifted painter and sculptor with a lively and colourful palette. His canvases remain ceramic objects he crafts in the pure tradition of instilling beauty to useful objects. There is also exuberant side to the artist which is highlighted in the little details he puts in the decoration of his pots. This is exemplified by the unique braided cord that he attaches to the lid of each pot he makes in this series. We've seen many in his studio and can attest that each one is different. Of course, we chose the prettiest one! Needless to say, this item is unique, signed by the artist, and proudly handcrafted in Taiwan. Complete your set with hand-painted cups featuring the same character in 6 different scenes as a perfect complement to this unique teapot.
