Hand-Painted Serene Luohan Tea Cup
We are very happy to finally be able to offer this playful series of 6 hand-decorated tea cup designs by renowned Taiwanese artist Bai Zong-Ping as individual cups. Not only is he a master potter in his own right, he is also an exceptionally gifted painter and sculptor with a lively and colourful palette. His canvases remain ceramic objects he crafts in the pure Taiwanese tradition of instilling beauty to useful objects. Featuring the whimsical hand-painted characters called luóhàn 羅漢 or Lohans, which is how buddhist arhats are referred to here, this series of 6 drawings plays on the imperfections of their attainments on the path of enlightenment where desires like good food and drink have not been fully eliminated and relapse into the pleasures of life remain possible. This particular cup features the representation of a serene, free-sprited Luohan 心適 which appears to be giddy with joy. Made from the highest quality porcelain, the hand-painted inside surface received an additional high-gloss top glaze. The outer surface features white engraved stylized scriptures on a black speckled glaze. The finish of each cup is simply flawless. The shape of cups is also most pleasant with a nice taper and gentle flare at the rim. Needless to say, these are unique items, signed by the artist, and proudly handcrafted in Taiwan.
