Master Zhang’s Wood-Fired Golden Mist Round Fang Gu Teapot with Black Knob, 200 ml
$ 199.00
This superb teapot is Zhang’s modern interpretation of a traditional Fang Gu shape featuring a near perfectly round shape. This pot is one of the many that we’ve stockpiled from several productions we sponsored in support of Mr. Zhang’s work during the slowdown caused by the pandemic. The local market for art and crafts came to halt and many artists and artisans suffered during that period and still do as we very slowly resurface at the other end of the ordeal. On a more positive note, this gave us an opportunity to work more closely with many of our collaborators and some, like Mr. Zhang, executed some of their best work as exemplified by this stunning teapot. This practical 200 ml size falls in the most commonly used in Taiwan for group Gong Fu sessions. Like many of his pots, this one and its sibbling are made from a blend of Miaoli purple clay with a smaller proportion of kaolin. This produces a denser, less porous material that turns into a light weight pot that is very good for more fragrant and pastoral teas but will fare equally well with darker teas. As with all of Mr. Zhang’s work, the shape and execution are flawless right down to the fit of the lid and the alignment of spout, handle and lid knob. The pots aesthetics is simply stunning with an even golden flare alternating with darker grey accents. The pot adorns a deep and uniform lustrous sheen and a distinctive darker lid knob as if it was intended to be like that by the artist. These aesthetic characteristics are purely accidental and the result of elements contained in the clay fusing during the firing process. The short straight spout with a finer opening will produce a nice arc when pouring. A pour out time of 9 seconds still rates it as quite fast as is customary in the art of Taiwanese-style tea making. Needless to say, this pot unique. What you see in the pictures is what you will get. Handmade in Taiwan.
