Many of you may have noticed by now that Taiwan Tea Crafts’ offerings are not the typical run of the mill of expected types of teas that everybody reads about in the few pages, if any, dedicated to Taiwanese teas in (western) books. Our selection is definitely rooted in tradition but we believe that tradition is a living canvas on which new approaches and expressions from the rich palette of elements comprising the Taiwanese tea terroir can help create the tea traditions of tomorrow. Such is the inspiration behind this Red Oolong Tea. This is an adaptation on a new style of tea from Yu Wen, our Tea Maker. The intention behind this tea was to develop a style of dark oolong that would best highlight the expressive potential of our local emblematic Jin Xuan T-12 cultivar. By definition this is neither a black tea nor a typical oolong but a bit of both. It is oxidized a bit like a black tea but the finishing stages are definitely like a rolled style oolong. We believe we’ve found the sweet spot with Lot 1041. In the early summer of 2023, we continued our experiments using Si Ji Chun (Four Seasons) this time for an added quench of sweet citrus notes. Speaking of sweet spot, this tea proposes a milk chocolate smoothness with a tangy apricot-like freshness. There is no dryness in the mouthfeel and it flows nicely with a lingering creamy finish. It is an elegant evening tea that can appeal to all palates. This tea is best appreciated in small vessels through a succession of shorter infusions.

Lane 503 is the lane we live on. We are one of many tea-making families living along it, among tea, ginger and pineapple gardens. Most of the long-established families are distant relatives to one another. This is the case with Zhubin’s and Yuwen’s, the 2 collaborators behind this tea and a few others that bear the same Lane 503 label. In the case of this Lot, one family grows the leaves, the other owns a factory to make it resulting in a collaborative effort, not out of convenience but out of a common passion for quality and breaking new ground in Taiwanese tea making. The leaves come from Zhubin’s family’s high-mountain garden on Beishan. This name might not ring many bells with tea aficionados but, like many places under the radar, they are little pristine jewels that are best preserved that way. The garden is secluded with a perfect eastern facing slope making it a perfect place to convert to organic growing practices. As of this year, the garden is officially in transition with the aim of certification in 3 years. Still, this means that the present Lot 592 is free of any synthetic pesticides. The Wuyi leaves used to make this tea come from bushes that are direct descendants of Wuyi trees brought to Taiwan from northern Fujian before the Japanese rule. This is a very rare cultivar in Taiwan today, especially when grown at such heights! Similar to their distant cousins, this Taiwanese Wuyi cultivar tea shows great potential for ageing. If we are releasing this tea it is because it complies to our requirements in the expansive pleasures of tea drinking’s as well as being a rare and authentic tea drinking experience.
