After introducing Red Jade GABA Tea to all of you a few years ago, we’re happy to propose much better lots than when we introduced them. We’ve worked with the producer to improve the manufacturing process to produce a smoother, sweeter tea with a touch of tartness. The tannins are tamer and balanced and by choosing to work exclusively with the more expressive spring crops. Lot 1109 was produced in the early Spring 2022 which actually qualifies it as a Pre-Qingming tea . The lower yields of 2023 has forced us to delay slightly the production of this tea to May but the resulting quality was well worth the wait! This tea is very generous and ample. If you hesitated beforehand, now’s the time to try it out! GABA Tea is one of a rare bread of teas that was initially developed for its purported health benefits. If you are not familiar with this aspect, check out the info tab. Now that this is said, we need to admit that the best thing about GABA tea is that it is wonderfully good in the cup! The special, oxygen-deprived environment that leaves are submitted to increases the content of GABA while slowly oxidizing them. This also smoothes out the tannins leaving a crisp tart fruity taste that is quite apealing. This unique production using organically grown Red Jade T-18 cultivar is very different tasting than our GABA oolong and our classic Red Jade Black Tea. It proposes the full bodied flavour of a Red jade Black tea with its fresh minty attack and tangy fruit compote finish that is both generous and refreshing. Just like its cousins, this GABA tea not only makes a beautiful hot beverage, it is fantastic as a refreshing iced tea!

GABA Tea is one of a rare bread of teas that was initially developed, not only for its resulting drinking enjoyment, but rather for its purported health benefits. Recently introduced in the 1990’s, it was developed by Dr. Tsushima Tojiro of Japan’s National Tea Experiment Station. His work resulted in a procedure that increases the content of γ-Aminobutyric acid, or gamma-Aminobutyric acid, or even simpler, GABA, the acronym of the term.
GABA plays a role in regulating neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. Because of its calming and soothing effects, GABA helps to lower blood pressure, helps to control hypoglycaemia, prevents anxiety and promotes restful sleep. To an extent, it also regulates appetite, which is helpful in maintaining an optimal body weight.
In addition, GABA is also directly responsible for the regulation of muscle tone. Many clinical studies have shown that the ingestion of GABA releases human growth hormones with remarkable effectiveness, especially after exercise. The release of growth hormones is known to increase lean body mass. Consequently, GABA tea is an invaluable nutritional supplement for body builders, power lifters, runners, martial artists, and athletes of all types
All teas have health-promoting compounds, but GABA tea has a very concentration of anti-oxidants, including catechins, flavanoids, and polyphenols. Anti-oxidants are helpful in fighting many types of disease including: cancer, Parkinson’s disease, senility, drug-induced deafness, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Brief steeps (few seconds) in 90 degree Celsius.
Liquor is clear with a dark golden amber in color.
Taste is somewhat fruity sweet in notes, with a hint of tartness in the long aftertaste.
There is no smokiness in aroma like what I sometimes get from GABA teas, which makes this GABA black tea a pleasant one.
Mouthfeel is slightly sticky from the infusion, but no astringency nor bitterness.
Wet leaves are dark bronzed-brown in hue, giving off a soft aroma of burnt sugar.
This tea withstands many infusions, with the flavor intensity starting to mellow down by the 8th/9th infusion.
