The name of this tea says it all. It is our top grade Lot in Oriental Beauty teas. Lot 1249 continues in the lineage that has garnered 2 Gold Medals back in 2018 and 2019. It comes from the same collaborators and made from leaves from the same high mountain garden earlier this spring and released this past summer. It is still extremely hard to find good quality top grade OB since not many producers have the desire to put such efforts in making a tea that yields so little quantity… This Lot is not only the result of a fine sorting, or grading if you prefer; when a production lot gets divided into batches based on presence of tips, colour and size of leaves. It is a lot that was expressely made to be a premium quality tea through a careful picking of only tender young leaves and buds (see picture) of the classic Qing Xin Da Mou cultivar and made with extra care to preserve the beautiful appearance of the fine curls of precious leaves. This beauty is also apparent in the cup! When pouring below boiling (+/- 90°C) water over this Supreme Tippy Oriental Beauty Tea, one will immediately recognize the compelling exuberant aroma of citrus fruits that is characteristic of a good Beauty tea. The cupping will not disappoint either, as the velvety honey-texture warms the palate and reveals the buoyancy of tangy citrus fruits with the exotic touches of dried mango and the hint of spiciness that makes this tea a perfect accompaniment to cakes and sweets.

This tea has many names. Oriental Beauty is possibly to most popular appellation for it in the western world since this name was given to it by Queen Elizabeth II when she described the wonderful experience of drinking it. Here, in Taiwan, it is more widely known as Bai Hao oolong (white tip oolong) or even Pong Fong tea. Out west, it was simply known as Formosa Oolong for many years. Either way you wish to call it, Oriental Beauty tea is one of the most distinctive Taiwanese tea there is. The local name of Bai Hao best describes one of its characteristic features: the presence of a white furry tip accompanied by the 2 following leaves which are carefully picked in the summer time. Oriental Beauty is a summer tea as the grower must wait until his crop has received the visit of small green leaf hoppers that will nibble the leaves and leave their characteristic contribution to the taste of this tea: a wonderfully sweet honey finish that is quite distinctive and pleasant. A deep oxidation of around 75% confers a wonderful fruitiness to the liqueur followed by a light roasting to blend in and seal all the expressive characteristics of this tea.
