What is a red oolong, you may ask? Essentially, this particular style of tea is produced following the same process as a ball-rolled high-mountain oolong. The only difference lies in the oxidation level of the leaves which is more accentuated bringing out the tangy stone fruit notes (peach, cherry) which dominate with hints of fresh vanilla and wintergreen freshness in the finish. It definitely remains a fragrant tea with its palette of sweet alpine meadow blooms and a hint of wild honey sweetness that characterizes a bug-bitten Mixiang tea. This last element is fairly rare and certainly a cause for celebration when one detects this. The mouthfeel is thick yet suave with very supple and silky tannins which hint at more amplitude with time as this tea is allowed to mellow, if one has the patience to wait! There is definitely good material in this tea which makes it a pleasure to drink now and/or later if allowed to age properly. If you indulge in Taiwan Black teas, you must try this tea for its expansive fruity character and; it you seek the authenticity of good craftsmanship and excellence that only passionate tea producers can instil in their finished tea. You can expect this tea to become a regular offering in our catalog as we have finally found the perfect group of collaborators to produce this custom tea just for us. The team consists of Mr. Chen, a relatively new producer that we’ve been working with for 3-4 years now. He operates with his wife a newly built state of the art production facility at the foot of the Shanlinxi range. Leaves are sourced from selected gardens that we’ve vetted for their responsible farming practices where pesticides are used only as a last resort when needed and never systematically, like it is often the case in the higher mountains. The bug-bitten Mixiang character of this tea testifies that it is the case. We highly recommend it as we believe this style of tea will soon become an emblematic offering from Taiwan. It is also a bargain considering other high-mountain black tea offerings.
