This is our second black tea offering of this magnificent T-21 tea strand this year. It may appear as we’re overdoing it which such a rare tea, even by Taiwanese standards. But, for those who’ve sampled our past lots, or had the rare privilege of tasting a good one, and understand, even slightly, why we are so infatuated with the teas produced from this unique Taiwanese cultivar will be pleased to hear that we simply could not take a pass on this particular Lot. We tend to prefer selecting Lots that are produced during the cooler seasons; like this Fall-picked tea. T-21 teas can be overpowering and, if not made by a skilled producer, can be void of the fruity character that makes it so appealing. Trust us, we’ve tasted so many bad ones. This Lot 569 reveals a balanced composition of structure, taste and aroma. A wonderful compote of stone fruits with a zest of citrussy tartiness with overtones of exotic fruits like our local Longan awaits you and a good dry tannic foundation with no harshness awaits you. Oh, and did we mention this tea was “clean” as in no pesticide residues? We’ve had it tested and it came out squeaky clean surpassing the stringent EU requirements. Gratification awaits the curious minds and palates!
We’re now down to the last few 25 g bags of this exceptional Lot.

Tea is too often associated with long standing traditions that are protected by sacred rituals and practices. Nothing must change, right? Wrong! Tea, at least in Taiwan, is rooted in traditions, yes, but it also has a definitive place in the present and is continually evolving towards the new. It is a living art. Nothing is more true than with this brand new black tea proposal made from one of the most recent tea hybrid to be commercialized by the Taiwan Tea Research and Extension Station (TRES). This No. 21 hybrid was also given the name Hong Yun (might be a tad confusing with Hong Yu TRES No. 18) which cannot be easily translated into one word. Yun refers to a certain positive vibration or energy that can be perceived. It also refers to a feeling that is indescribable with words… one must experience it. This name seems so fitting with this tea, and the essence of tea in general!
Hong Yun is the result of a hybridization project that involved crossing a Burmese large leaf strand with the one responsible for the famous Qimen Black Tea (or Keemun) originating from the Huang Shan mountains of Anhui Province in China. The result is surprisingly balanced and perceivable in the combination of aromas and tastes. First of all, in both cases these are sophisticated teas that are charmingly smooth, refreshing and easy to drink. Hong Yun is obviously in the same vein. The tangy cherry fruitiness of the Qimen blends in beautifully with the honey sweetness and thickness of the Shancha. The result is like a harmonious duet of crystaline voices. Its exotic and alluring, yet recognizable and comforting.

Quite different from last year’s Hong Yun (lot 276), but still excellent in its own way. Very elegant tea. The difference between those two lots might indicate, that the farmers still have not found the perfect way to treat this new cultivar. Nevertheless, in my opinion it is one of the world’s greatest black tea cultivars with a potential to overshadow the T-18 Red Jade.
