Vintage Dong Feng Red Clay Teapot, 100 ml
From: $ 59.00
We are very excited about this lucky find we’ve made of a small lot of 1980s Taiwanese clay pots in their original packing, new and un-used, and in excellent condition. Even though Dong Feng 東峰 means eastern peaks and would make a poetic name for a style of teapot, it is not the case here. This style of pot would be closer to a classic Xiao Ying shape. Dong Feng or Tong Fon, as the box implies, is the name of the company that produced this teapot in the 1980s. Based in Taiwan’s ceramic industry’s centre of Yingge, Dong Feng produced fine clay wares but no longer does today to concentrate on other appliances now. The drip casting of the main body and hand assembly of the spout and handle are impecable and perfectly aligned. The finishing is superb. Clearly, the level of quality of these pots is of a very high standard. This is also reflected in the pour and handling of the pot which is true joy to work with. What makes this pot even more unique is the high purity of the soil used to make it. There is no presence of kaolinite in this clay. Kaolin (the main constituent of porcelain) was introduced in the 1990’s as a way to reduce the cost of making clay wares in Taiwan. This being said, we are not implying that kaolin makes a poor pot making material but it certainly makes for a denser, less porous teapot. Here, we are clearly in the presence of a fine clay with its natural fine speckle and rougher surface. We’re happy to make these rare pots available to you at a very affordable price for this quality of pot. Made in Taiwan.

Hi, is this vintage Dong feng Red Clay Teapot handmade?
Thanks,
Taiwan Tea Crafts –
Hello Michelle,
If your use of the term “handmade” refers to it being hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel, this is not the case. As we mention in the description, the main body and parts are cast and then hand-corrected and assembled. The higher quality of the workmanship and materials on this pot are definitely noticeable!

Splendid teapot. Balanced, with perfect alignment, it’s a pleasure to manipulate it and see how well and precisely it pours. The 7-hole filter is made with fineness. The finish is slightly grainy, pledge of quality of its clay.
