For those of you who are puzzled about the intended use of a tea boat, let’s say that it is not meant to float, like it’s name may imply, but to hold liquids; tea in this case. The name Tea Boat is the literal translation of Cha Chuan in Mandarin. Those that are familiar with their use are more accustomed to seeing such items in wood. In Taiwan, ceremonial settings will most often make use of a finely crafted ceramic plate or large bowl in which the teapot sits when making tea. In this case, the pot would seems to sit on a high podium! The height of this particular design is for other uses that can be attributed to it. With the lid off, one can use it as a shuifang. It can also be used to make cauldron-style infusions where the pot would be deposited inside while brewing and hot water poured around the pot to further push the infusion. This technique is fairly new and has its followers in Taiwan. Finally, it can also be used as a storage jar for the matching pot and cups that comprise the beautiful tea set we’ve assembled here featuring the beautiful two-tone weathered glaze with areas of sapphire blue and emerald green over an ochre base that has been selectively brushed off in some areas giving the pot an attractive weathered look. The top plate features the character 茶 (chá for tea) and a nice frise on the outer circumference. This tea boat was designed to be a component of a matching tea set with cups and the matching teapot. Signed and dated by the artist. Handmade in Taiwan.
