Xiao Bai's Chocolate Melt Scalloped Angular Porcelain Teapot, 225 ml
This teapot is the work of Xiao Bai, the youngest potter in the family that runs the Bai Mu Quan Studio. This pot is from a body of work that precedes the pandemic but was acquired during the brunt of it when Xiao Bai's output had essentially come to a halt. In support of the artist's hardship, we acquired several pieces that we are introducing in the Fall of 2023. This Modern shaped pot brings us back to the time when Xiao Bai's work was inspired by more angular lines like in this case, where 2 conical shapes are fitted on top of each other creating an horizontal edge along the largest diameter of the pots body. The top section of the body narrows to a nearly flat lid that is housed in a recessed lip with perfect tolerances in both diameter and flatness. The precision in the craftsmanship is simply stunning considering the challenges of working with porcelain as a material of choice. A finely tapered and shallow handle sits high on the pot to offer precise handling of the pot. The wall thickness is thin and even all throughout the body and lid. The short spout blends in smoothly into the body's shape and proposes a generous opening and 10-hole filter for quick pours as the Taiwanese way requires. Finally, the high contrast finish is expressed in colour and in texture. The brushed Chocolate Melt Outer Glaze is further contrasted by a pattern of sculpted vertical lines and scalloping all around the exterior. A gloss white glaze seals the inside of the pot for perfectly neutral brews. This unique item is signed by the artist and proudly hand-crafted in Taiwan.
