Xiao Bai's Fluted Gloss White Dobin Teapot, 200 ml
This elegant teapot is the work of Xiao Bai, the youngest potter in the family that runs the Bai Mu Quan Studio. This pot is from a body of work that precedes the pandemic but was acquired during the brunt of it when Xiao Bai's output had essentially come to a halt. In support of the artist's hardship, we acquired several pieces that we are introducing in the Fall of 2023. This robin-style pot is from a series of wares that featured contrasting coloured lids, often painted to mimic wood grain, like it is the case here. The pot also marks the time when he started using fine fluted design elements to decorate the body of his pots. The fine flutes are barely perceptible at the touch but are highlighted by the glow overglaze that adorns this piece. The precision in the craftsmanship is simply stunning considering the challenges of working with porcelain as a material of choice. The wall thickness is thin and even all throughout the body and lid. The short spout blends in smoothly into the body's shape and proposes a generous opening and 13-hole filter for quick pours as the Taiwanese way requires. Xiao Bai adds metalworking to his credits on this piece as the fine copper top handle was cut and shaped by himself and finely fitted to the pots body. The handle is easily removable, if need be. Finally, the high gloss outer glaze is complemented by a high gloss white glaze applied to the inside of the pot making this instrument neutral. A true standout piece. This unique item is signed by the artist and proudly hand-crafted in Taiwan.
