The exuberant and exotic aromatics of Taiwan oolongs is undisputed in the tea world. Nowhere can we duplicate Taiwan’s rich terroir for tea growing. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that Taiwan’s offering in black teas can be equally fragrant and expressive! One of it’s most impressive and representative black tea is undoubtedly Red Jade. Introduced barely 15 years ago, this expressive cultivar has been the driving force in the rebuilding of the black tea industry in Taiwan following the devastating 1999 earthquake. This explains the relative young age of this “aged” Lot. The popularity of Red Jade as a fresh tea explains how scarce aged Red Jade Lots are! In fact, when we discovered this Lot, we bought everything that was available. This special find makes it quite a unique tea to experience and a great candidate for further mellowing with time. This tea still has the vigour and the tannic structure of a fresh Red Jade but has developed more intricate and transformed fruit notes veiled with wine like complexity. One might detect dark plum, wild cherry with grappa-like crispness with precious wood undertones. It is both sweet and dry with a wonderful complexity that will take on many more shades of colour if it is allowed to age further. This tea would make a great accompanyment to any rich desert like plum-pudding or mince tarts. It is extremely generous and will provide numerous re-infusions of precious and unique liqueur. A rare treat!

The majestic Sun Moon Lake’s plateau of rolling hills in Central Nantou county provides the perfect setting for this one of kind tea. This beautiful scenic area of Taiwan has a long history with black tea cultivation that dates back to the 1920’s, when the island was under the colonial rule of Japan. After the demise of Japan at the conclusion of WW II, the black tea plantations fell into disuse and the land was converted to other crops. It is only since the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of Sept. 1999 that a renewed interest resurfaced.
It is comforting to know that tea enthusiasts can modestly contribute to the success of this turn around with each Red Jade cup they drink. The effort needed to do so is less than painful considering the truly remarkable and distinct drinking experience it brings!
