Lot 1264 continues with the successful collaboration started a free years ago between a grower in the beautiful terroir of Zhushan and our family. Yes, this is not an Oriental Beauty that originates from it’s original terroir, further north, in the counties of Hsinchu and Miaoli, but from an area, between Shanlinxi and Alishan, most celebrated for its fragrant high-mountain oolongs . We’ve challenged a friend to produce a Beauty tea from his summer picking of Qing Xin leaves. This grower is coincidentally often blessed with a generous presence of “Mixiang” taste and aroma from his leaf pickings: the sought after, and often elusive, honey component that is so characteristic of good OBs. His strict obedience to non-abusive responsible practices regarding pesticide usage certainly offers a more welcoming terrain for the little leaf hoppers to offer their contribution in bringing out the honey taste! The produced tea was then finished in our own premises where our resident master has slow baked this lot to perfection. A good bouquet of fruits with a hint of rose entices the taste buds that will confirm the refreshing quench of marmalade-like citrus notes with a thick wild honey brioche texture and balanced spiciness. There is nothing low-end to this Oriental Beauty tea apart from the price! It is generous and most satisfying.

This tea has many names. Oriental Beauty is possibly to most popular appellation for it in the western world since this name was given to it by Queen Elizabeth II when she described the wonderful experience of drinking it. Here, in Taiwan, it is more widely known as Bai Hao oolong (white tip oolong) or even Pong Fong tea. Out west, it was simply known as Formosa Oolong for many years. Either way you wish to call it, Oriental Beauty tea is one of the most distinctive Taiwanese tea there is. The local name of Bai Hao best describes one of its characteristic features: the presence of a white furry tip accompanied by the 2 following leaves which are carefully picked in the summer time. Oriental Beauty is a summer tea as the grower must wait until his crop has received the visit of small green leaf hoppers that will nibble the leaves and leave their characteristic contribution to the taste of this tea: a wonderfully sweet honey finish that is quite distinctive and pleasant. A deep oxidation of around 75% confers a wonderful fruitiness to the liqueur followed by a light roasting to blend in and seal all the expressive characteristics of this tea.

This is the first time that I drink Bai Hao, I am really impressed.
The leaves are pretty beautiful and the high degree of oxidation is quite obvious.
Through the various infusions, I noticed two things – first, the long-lasting aftertaste, second, my tea room is completely filled with an aroma that I would describe as “flowery garden”.
During the first few infusions, the tea has a strong sweet/flowery taste and an aroma that is hard to describe, partly resembling the Taiwanese blacks tea (that I really love), partly unique, at least as far as I could taste until today.
Continuing with the infusions, this tea resists quite well, with a rather high number of cups, leaving a lingering sweet taste, less floral, but equally good.
I will compare this lot with those of higher grade, in order to check if this tea can really be even better!
For those interested, these are my parameters.
Teapot: 120 ml Kobiwako clay.
Quantity: 8 grams
Infusions: quick rinse to warm up the leaves, flash brew, 5 seconds brew, 10 seconds brew and so on ..
