We’re breaking winter’s dormancy with this first 2023 tea and are quite thrilled to be doing so with a very new contender to the title of first tea of the year. This Organic T-23 Qi Yun White Tea will appeal to all who enjoyed our Fragrant Jade series of white and green teas in the past. First, it is made with the same long time collaborator as the previous series. Mr. Yu is well connected with our National Tea Research Institute and is very often asked to participate in testing new cultivars before they are released. This was the case with the Qi Yun cultivar which he grows on a very small isolated garden patch since 2019. We’ve been his guinea pigs testing his first teas made from this improved Qimen cultivar and are thrilled to see that the bushes are now finally producing just enough tea to make it feasible to propose on Taiwan Tea Crafts. This Lot 1200 is made from the very first pluck of young shoots with plenty of buds. The leaves were briefly sun-withered followed by inside withering until the desired water loss was attained, and dried. The leaves received minimal transformation with a very light oxidation. This is as close to drinking tea made from fresh plucked leaves. The best way to enjoy this tea is through a continuous steep; simply drop a quantity of leaves into a pot or bowl, pour boiling water, let steep to the desired taste, enjoy, and top up with water as you go along. The leaves are surprisingly generous and the resulting fresh liqueur is also very nice as a room temperature beverage. Expect slightly acidic balsam freshness with light osmanthus sweetness, bright and flowing with very light tannins. It’s a cup of Spring in February, need we say more! You might also be interested to compare this T-23 white tea with it’s older sibling: a T-23 black tea we made from leaves of the same garden in the Fall of 2022; a perfect pair to break the spell of winter.

As its high number suggests, the Taicha No. 23 cultivar is one of the most recently launched tea cultivars developed by the Taiwan’s Tea Research and Extension Station (TRES). It received its name 祈韻 Qí Yùn in 2017. The name’s first character refers to the famous Qimen variety from which T-23 is derived from. The second character 韻 is the same as used with the latest generation of cultivars from TRES. Like our popular T-21 Hong Yun, Yùn refers to the harmonious feeling provided by a good rhyme or melody where dissonance has no place. This hardy, high-yielding small leaf bush has a high bud density and is fast growing. It comes as no surprise that T-23 teas feature often as our first spring tea offerings. The T-23 teas we provide come from a very small organic garden maintained by one of our neighbours and long time collaborator who very often participates in TRES’ trial plantations of new varieties. The garden was planted in 2019 and is just starting to produce a reasonable quantity of leaves to make it feasible to promote. We’ve been experimenting with this cultivar in the last 2 years and have produced Gaba Teas, Black Teas and White Teas with it. Naturally, as a derivative of Qimen, the T-23 cultivar produces expressive black teas but fares very well as a white tea. Although still quite rare, T-23 teas hold great potential for their popular appeal.
